Samsung Looking to Open Up to 4,000 Phone Stores Across India

Samsung is planning to open between 3,000 to 4,000 retail stores across India as the company seeks to fend off competition from cheaper mobile phone manufacturers.
The company has opened 10 stores on a pilot basis, and the intention is that the shops will be smaller stores with daily stock deliveries by distributors.
The move echoes the early days at Nokia which set up a substantial retail presence across the country and that helped it secure its early dominance of entry level handsets.
Samsung India's country head for mobile phones Vineet Taneja said that the company is targeting Indian towns with populations of fewer than 100,000 for the retail push.
"It is indeed a big challenge since modern retailing is yet to make any entry in these small towns and villages, and at best, there will be one small street that is the retail hub," Taneja said.
Most of the stores are expected to be franchise operations. Samsung already has 2,000 larger franchise stores across Indian.
