Apple is reportedly hiring hundreds of engineers in China and Taiwan as the company seeks to speed up its handset development.
Potentially taking advantage of other weakening smartphone manufacturers, Apple is said to have been poaching top engineers from the likes of HTC and Chinese smartphone vendors.
The hiring started last year, the Wall Street Journal reported, and the company has taken on several hundred new staff in the past few months.
"Apple is building an engineering team in Taipei to drive new iPhone product development," Apple said in a LinkedIn recruiting e-mail, according to the Journal.
Apple is now said to have an engineering staff of around 600 staff on the Chinese mainland, and is opening an R&D facility in Taiwan.
It is unlikely that the hugely profitable Apple is doing this to save costs, but is likely to be seeking to be able to localise its handsets for the Chinese market and do so faster than before.
Equally likely, the firm is looking to broaden the range of iPhone handsets, and needs to bring in fresh engineering skills from staff who are used to working on a wider range of devices.
