Microsoft is reportedly offering its Windows Phone OS as a free software package to two of India's smartphone manufacturers as in incentive to them to develop compatible handsets for the local market.
Multiple industry sources with knowledge of Microsoft's negotiations with Indian phone companies told the Times of India that the company had signed deals with Lava and Karbonn.
Both companies are traditional Android vendors, but are now said to be working on Windows Phone based handsets following the free OS deal.
An unnamed executive at one of the handset manufacturers confirmed that: "for our planned Windows Phone handsets, we are not paying Microsoft a licence fee."
A Microsoft spokesman, while not confirming the specifics did indicate that an option for offering the OS as free software was available to the company when necessary.
