Apple has with a deeply uncharacteristic lack of fuss slipped out a new iPhone model for sale.
However, it is just a variant of the existing lacklustre iPhone 5c with a smaller memory to try and bring down the cost of the handset to make it more appealing to buyers.
The lack of fuss could be due to some embaressment at the company about how the 5c handset has been pretty much a flop with very few customers willing to put up with the obviously cheaper looking phone, when a modest extra payment can give them the 5s model instead.
The new even cheaper 5c handset is only being sold in a selected number of markets, such as China, which would be obvious, and some western European markets, which is less so.
The company was recently rumoured to be sitting on a warehouse of some 2 million units of unsold 5c smartphones, and this new cheaper variant -- that comes with 8GB of memory -- could be a way of clearing unsold stocks of previously ordered components.
In the UK, the cheaper variant of the 5c is being offered for free with a 2-year contract by O2, which is roughly £50 cheaper than the higher spec version with double the memory.
In China, the phone is being offered at RMB4,088, which is a saving of RMB400 against the 16GB memory model.
