A stock market analyst has suggested that Vodafone could sell the majority of its assets outside of six main markets and focus on those.
Swiss broker UBS wrote that contrary to using its Verizon windfall for acquisitions, it might seek to sell some of the smaller networks in countries where it does not expect to become the leading player in the market.
The broker based its research note on a meeting with Vodafone's Chief Executive Vittorio Colao.
It concluded from the meeting that Vodafone expects consolidation in Europe to be the main focus over the next few years, with several large networks offering quad-play services across the continent.
He however warned that while consolidation is likely, regulatory concessions such as more MVNOs could weaken the case for increased investment in the long term.
Colao also indicated that there could be more moves into the landline market in the UK following its acquisition of Cable & Wireless a couple of years ago. That would however be dependent on how the dominant landline operator, BT fares with its soon to launch mobile service.
