Thousands of employees at Germany's Deutsche Telekom are expected to go on strike this week as the Verdi trade union pressures the company to raise wages.
The walkout is expected to affect mainly customer care and technical support services, and is being called under a so-called warning strike of limited duration. Such a declaration doesn't need a full strike ballot by union members before being called.
Deutsche Telekom has offered a pay rise of 3 percent, but then no more rises for two years. The Verdi union is arguing for a 5.5 percent rise, with fresh negotiations next year.
Verdi is also pressuring the company to scale back its redundancy programme, which sees some mandatory job losses in some roles as the company seeks to reduce its staff by 7.5% over three years at its T-Systems subsidiary.
Any agreement would cover 72,000 employees n Germany, excluding the T-Systems division.
