Japan's NTT DoCoMo plans a huge expansion of its LTE network doubling the number of base stations in just one year to more than 100 000 company officials said Thursday.
The expansion is needed to cope with surging demand for mobile data services the company official added.
He said that the company will spend ¥400 billion (US$3.9 billion) to beef up its LTE network in fiscal 2014, up about 20 percent from 2013.
That makes the investment one of the larger LTE contracts expected to be issued to infrastructure vendors this year outside China.
NTT Docomo reported 62.2 million subscribers at the end of last year, of which 19 million are using its LTE network.
