Apple appears to be looking to improve the performance of its Siri voice activation service having recently bought UK based speech recognition software developer Novauris Technologies according to TechCrunch.
The purchase appears to have taken place last year. There was no confirmation from Novauris, although an Apple spokeswoman has confirmed the deal.
The key difference that the Novauris system offers is that it processes speech not on a per-word basis, but in phrases. It is said to be able to match up to 245 million phrases, regardless of the grammar used.
Novauris' former CEO, Yoon Kim is now working on Apple's Siridevelopment team, according to his personal LinkedIn profile.
The transaction fits Apple's profile of buying small companies for a single specific technology and absorbing it into its core products, unlike say Facebook or Google which tend to buy large proven consumer services and keeps them running, at least initially.
